Family Development
WSOS provides comprehensive family development, workforce development, education and child care assistance and other support services to families and individuals desiring to obtain basic needs stability, greater independence and self sufficiency.
Staff help families prepare for successful employment opportunities. We help individuals gain and retain employment with benefits, provide follow up services to ensure long term job retention and build community partnerships to support these efforts.
This is addressed through basic needs financial assistance programs, family and workforce development activities including case management, life skills, educational and vocational development and individual counseling.

Youth Employment Services

WSOS operates a youth education initiative, The Work and Wisdom Program, funded by the Hancock County Department of Jobs and Family Services.

Services Provided
Educational Aspect - Each person will be tested to determine their basic skill level and their occupational interests. Other educational aspects of the program include pre-employment and training, motivational training, mentoring, and career explorations.

Work Experience - As paid and unpaid employees of WSOS, the youth are placed in various job sites throughout the area to gain knowledge and experience in the workforce.

On-the-Job-Training/Internships - To aid the youth and employers, On-the-Job-Training is an opportunity that offsets training costs for employers and provides the youth with hands-on work experience. Internships also provide hands-on training within a professional or factory setting.

Job Placement and Development - Staff assist youth in obtaining and retaining employment in the private sector.

Who's Eligible?
  • Must be between the ages of 14 - 21 years old and
  • Low-income
  • Receiving cash assistance or food stamps in the past six months and
  • Have one of the following barriers - Youth Offender, Foster Child, Pregnant or Parenting, School Dropout, Homeless, Basic Literacy Skills Deficient, or requires additional assistance to complete their education program.
