TRIPS announces rate change

TRIPS public transportation service will institute a fare change effective Jan.1, 2017.

The change will be a $1 increase per trip within TRIPS existing fare schedule. New fares will be as follows:

  • $2 per one-way trip within the City of Fremont
  • $3 per one-way trip within Ballville and Sandusky Townships
  • $4 per one-way trip within the remainder of Sandusky County.

Adjustments to the fare schedule are commensurate with other rural public transportation providers throughout the state. At an average rate of $3 per trip, the service compares with other Ohio counties’ transportation service rates.

“We know that fare increases are not necessarily popular, but we feel it is the move we need to make to keep public transportation viable in Sandusky County,” TRIPS Transportation Coordinator Bill Duncan said.

TRIPS fare rates have not been adjusted since 2010.

“In order to keep up with expenses for TRIPS, as well as the reductions in some funding sources for TRIPS, we felt it was time to renew our rate schedule to keep up with the costs of running the service,” Duncan said. “Fares were raised modestly in order to minimize the impact on our riders and to keep the service affordable.”

In 2015, TRIPS provided 544,167 miles of public transportation, which includes services for low-income persons for medical and healthcare transportation, senior citizens, and disabled individuals as well as the general public. TRIPS is a non-profit rural transportation service administered by WSOS Community Action Commission and supported through funding sources that include the Federal Transit Administration, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and rider fees.
